What do you have stored in your garage? My clients often use their garages as a place to park their cars, a storage hub for tools, and even a place to create DIY projects. But without the right storage solutions, garages can quickly become cluttered and chaotic. That’s where garage cabinets come in. Choosing the right garage cabinet material will keep them looking and functioning well, no matter what your climate.

Unlike indoor storage spaces, garage cabinets have to endure factors like temperature fluctuations, humidity, and exposure to chemicals like oil and gasoline. These can all cause significant wear and tear. Some materials might warp, crack, or rust, while others may be vulnerable to pests like termites or rodents. It’s important to choose the right material from the start.

In this article, we’ll go over the following topics:

  • Understanding the challenges of garage environments
  • Best materials for garage cabinets
  • Choosing the right materials based on climate and temperature
  • Additional protective measures for longevity

If you’re ready to invest in a garage cabinet storage system and you want to be sure to choose the right materials, keep reading!

Understanding the Challenges of Garage Environments

Before choosing your cabinet material, it’s important to understand the conditions your garage cabinets will face.

  • Fluctuating Temperatures: If you live in an area with extreme seasons, your garage may experience freezing cold in winter and sweltering heat in summer. Some materials, like wood and plastic, expand and contract with temperature swings, which can lead to warping, cracking, or brittleness over time.
  • Humidity and Moisture: Damp conditions can be a big problem, especially if your garage isn’t climate-controlled. Humidity can cause wood to swell, MDF to break down, and metal to rust if it’s not properly treated.
  • Chemical and Oil Exposure: Many homeowners store motor oil, gasoline, cleaning solutions, and other chemicals in their garages. Some types of wood absorb chemicals, which can lead to staining and unpleasant odors, while metal surfaces can corrode if exposed to harsh substances.
  • Pest Resistance: Mice, termites, and other pests can cause damage to certain materials. Rodents, in particular, love chewing on wood and particleboard, while termites can cause extensive damage to untreated wooden cabinets. Metal and plastic cabinets are generally pest-proof.

Best Materials for Garage Cabinets

Now that we’ve covered the environmental challenges, let’s explore the best materials for garage cabinets and how they hold up under different conditions.

Metal Cabinets

Metal cabinets are one of the most durable options for garage storage. They resist temperature fluctuations, pests, and heavy loads without sagging. Powder-coated steel, aluminum, and stainless steel are great choices because they are resistant to rust and corrosion.

Metal cabinets do have a few downsides. If they aren’t properly coated, they can develop rust over time, especially in humid environments. They can also dent if they’re hit with something heavy, like a falling tool.

Plywood Cabinets

Plywood cabinets offer a good balance between strength and affordability. Plywood is made from layers of wood veneer, which gives it some resistance to warping and cracking. Marine-grade plywood is particularly durable and designed to stand up to high humidity and moisture.

However, if plywood isn’t properly sealed, it can still absorb moisture and warp over time. It’s a great option for garages in moderate climates but often needs additional waterproofing treatments in humid or wet places.

MDF & Particleboard Cabinets

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and particleboard cabinets are well-known for their affordability and smooth surface, making them easy to paint or customize. This makes them attractive if you’re on a budget.

These materials have one major weakness: If exposed to humidity, MDF and particleboard can swell, weaken, and even crumble over time. Because of this, they are only suitable for garages that stay dry year-round. Even then, they’re not the most durable option for holding heavy tools or equipment.

Plastic & Resin Cabinets

Plastic and resin cabinets are an excellent choice if you’re looking for lightweight, water-resistant, and rust-proof storage. These materials hold up well against humidity and chemical exposure, making them a great option for garages in damp or coastal regions.

Plastic cabinets do have some limitations, though. In extremely cold temperatures, plastic can become brittle and prone to cracking. Also, some lower-quality plastic cabinets have limited weight capacity, so they may not be the best choice for storing heavy items. If you opt for plastic cabinets, look for heavy-duty resin models that offer extra durability.

Choosing the Right Materials Based on Climate and Temperature

Now that we’ve reviewed the pros and cons of different materials, let’s break down the best choices based on climate conditions.

Hot and Dry Climates

In hot and dry climates, powder-coated metal or heavy-duty plastic cabinets are your best bet. Wood can crack and warp due to excessive dryness, while metal and plastic withstand heat well. To prevent overheating, avoid dark-colored metal cabinets, as they absorb and retain heat. If your garage gets extremely hot in the summer, consider adding ventilation or insulation to protect both your cabinets and stored items.

Cold Climates

For cold climates that experience snowy winters and below-freezing temperatures, plywood with a protective sealant or powder-coated metal is ideal. MDF and particleboard absorb moisture and break down in these conditions, while plastic may become brittle. A well-insulated garage can help stabilize temperatures and protect your storage units from extreme cold.

Humid and Coastal Climates

In humid and coastal climates, stainless steel or marine-grade plywood is the best choice. Regular metal rusts when exposed to moisture, and untreated wood warps over time. To prolong the life of your cabinets, apply anti-rust coatings to metal surfaces and waterproof sealants to wood. Keeping your garage well-ventilated or using a dehumidifier can help reduce excess moisture.

Four-Season Climates

If your area experiences a mix of hot summers, cold winters, and seasonal changes, powder-coated steel or high-density plastic will offer the best durability. These materials adapt well to fluctuating temperatures without warping or breaking down. Investing in proper ventilation, insulation, or even a simple dehumidifier can also protect your cabinets and belongings from damage.

Additional Protective Measures for Longevity

Depending on the material you choose, a few extra precautions can help keep your garage cabinets looking great year after year.

  • Sealing & Waterproofing: If you have wooden cabinets, applying a waterproof sealant is essential to protect against moisture damage. This is especially important if your garage is prone to humidity or leaks.
  • Coatings & Finishes: Powder-coated metal resists rust, while waterproof finishes on wood help prevent swelling and warping. For added protection, you can also use a rust-inhibiting spray on metal surfaces.
  • Proper Ventilation: Keeping your garage well-ventilated helps reduce humidity levels, preventing mold, mildew, and rust buildup on your cabinets. If moisture is a major concern, consider installing a dehumidifier.

Storage Best Practices: Keeping cabinets elevated off the ground prevents water damage from leaks or floods. You should also avoid placing cabinets directly against exterior walls, as this can increase the risk of condensation buildup.

Conclusion

Choosing the right garage cabinet material depends on your climate, budget, and specific storage needs. Metal and plastic work well in extreme temperatures, while plywood can handle humidity when properly sealed. MDF and particleboard are best for dry environments but have limited durability. By understanding your garage environment and taking protective measures, you can make sure that your cabinets stay in great shape for years to come.
